Bush Pulled Strings to Avoid Vietnam, & Got Favorable Treatment

To put it in perspective, here are 9 ways Bush got favored treatment in the service due to his political connections (he was then son of a Congressman and grandson of a former Senator):

  1. He got into the Guard by pulling strings, avoiding the year and a half waiting list;

  2. He took a 2-month vacation in Florida after just 8 weeks, (1 of 3 leaves), to work on a political campaign;

  3. Bush skipped Officer Candidate School and got a special commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, without qualifications;

  4. He was assigned to a safe plane (being phased out of active service), the F-102 ;

  5. During flight school, he was flown on a government jet to Washington for a date with President Nixon's daughter Tricia ;

  6. Bush got an illegal transfer (later overruled) to a base with no work;

  7. He simply didn't show up for a YEAR, with no penalty;

  8. George W. skipped all his medical exams after they started drug tests, and was removed from flight status;

  9. He ended his service 10 months early to go to Harvard Business School;

BUSH TRUSTS HYPOCRISY, NOT THE PEOPLE

One of the ironies of Bush's legal attempt to prevent hand counting of voters' ballots in Florida is that he spent the last months of the campaign telling the people that he trusts them while Al Gore trusts the federal government. Yet, today, he's doing exactly the opposite, calling upon the federal government to void the hand counted votes of the people. Now, comes another irony, another example of Bush hyporcisy. The core of Bush's law suit against the state of Florida is that a machine count of the votes is more accurate than a hand count, and a hand count will simply introduce inaccuracies into the counting process. Yet, two years ago in Texas, Bush signed a bill into law that did just the opposite, affirming that a hand count is more accurate than a machine count.

Everything you need to know about the Florida recount

Hanging chads! Overvoting! A crash course in the Sunshine State electoral idiosyncrasies that could determine our next president.

According to unofficial numbers reported by the Associated Press, the statewide recount ended in a pick-up of 2,520 votes for Gore, while Bush received 1,063 additional votes. Bush now leads Gore by only 327 in the entire state.

Glassberg says Gore's vote pick-up can be attributed to the "hanging chad." The chad is the perforated hole that is punched out by the stylus in the ballot machines used in South Florida. Chads that were not completely punched would not have been read by the machine. But with time, Glassberg says, the chads fall off, so it is possible that those ballots were rendered readable the second time around.

Voters downstate, where Gore ran strong, used punch card ballots, while many upstate counties where Bush ran strong, used OpScan ballots. The OpScan is a fill-in ballot, similar to the forms used on standardized tests like an SAT.

Sources close to the process say Democrats are hoping to find irregularities in ballots not read by the machine that humans may be able to easily count as intended votes for one candidate.
....
We found that if you took a correct ballot and turned them over and lay it over the so-called unmarked ballot, you could see to a certainty who these people were voting for."
....
In Broward County, Democrats say 6,000 ballots were partially punched out, but not all the way, rendering them unreadable. Since the county went heavily for Gore, it's likely to be the next place where a manual recount is demanded.

NAACP hears testimony of alleged Florida voting irregularities

By ALLEN G. BREED The Associated Press 11/11/00 6:53 PM

Donnise DeSouza waited until 6:30 p.m. last Tuesday to go to the polls so she could pick up her son after work and take him with her.

"I wanted him to witness the democratic process," the 36-year-old Miami attorney told a hushed crowd at a church community center Saturday. "He was going to help me pick a president."

After waiting 20 minutes to park, she finally got to the registration table, only to be told her name was not on the list. She was told to stand aside and wait with about 15 other people, and they were all finally told that they would not be allowed to vote.

"Then I had to explain it to my 5-year-old son, and he couldn't understand" she said, nearing tears. "He cried all the way home because we could not vote."

Analysis: Bush Is Cooked Unless He Acts

by Christopher Ruddy

Bush doesn’t have much time, because if the manual recount is completed in Miami, Broward and Palm Beach, Gore becomes president.

Maximum pressure should be exerted on Gore to concede now. Not tomorrow, now.

Each day since the election Gore has grown stronger and Bush has weakened.
